The California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) is a product of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Biogeographic Data Branch (BDB). The CNDDB is both a manual and computerized library of the status and locations of California's rare species and natural community types. The CNDDB includes in its data all federally and state listed plants and animals, all species that are candidates for listing, all species of special concern, and those species that are considered "sensitive" by government agencies and the conservation community. The computerized information is available for a fee in hardcopy and digital forms. The CNDDB is a dynamic system with information continually being added and upgraded. The CNDDB contains over 98,000 locational records for over 2,500 elements (plant taxa, animal taxa, and natural communities). A location record is referred to as an Element Occurrence (EO), and is a site that contains an individual, population, nest site, den, or stand of a special status element. Populations, individuals, or colonies located within 1/4 mile of each other generally constitute a single occurrence, sometimes with multiple parts.
<purpose>To provide the most current information and to track the location and condition of California's many species of rare and sensitive plants, animals, and natural communities.</purpose>
<supplinf>We work very hard to keep the CNDDB as current and up to date as possible given our capabilities and resources. However, we cannot and do not portray the CNDDB as an exhaustive and comprehensive inventory of rare species and natural communities. Field verification for the absence and presence of sensitive species will always be an important obligation of our customers. Likewise, your contribution of data to the CNDDB is equally important to the maintenance of the CNDDB. https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Data/CNDDB/Submitting-Data</supplinf>

<accconst>All uses of data from the CNDDB are subject to the terms and conditions contained in our License Agreement. (https://wildlife.ca.gov/Data/CNDDB/Subscribe)</accconst>
<useconst>
The CNDDB is offered on a yearly subscription basis; it includes monthly downloadable spatial data and access to an online version of RareFind. We offer the entire statewide dataset along with the GIS shapefile for use in many popular GIS software packages. The rate for Commercial, Non-profit and Government subscribers is $600 for the initial subscription year and $400 for subsequent renewal years. However, should the subscription lapse 6 months or more from the established anniversary month (i.e., month of initial subscription), subscription will commence again at the initial start-up rate of $600.
Organizations can make as many copies of the data and application as necessary for their internal use but cannot make copies for distribution outside of their organization.

<attrdef>Key Quad. The USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle map which contains the centrum of this occurrence. This code is expressed as a modified USGS code consisting of one degree blocks sub-divided into sixty-four 7.5 minute maps. The one degree block is referenced by the latitude and longitude of its southeast corner (ie: 38121). Individual maps within the block are referenced by an alpha-numeric code. This code originates at the same southeast corner as the one degree block and runs numerically east to west, and alphabetically south to north. This creates a grid allowing maps to be coded by the intersection of these axis (ie: B5). A complete map code would be 38121B5. The CNDDB QUADCODE converts this value to an integer by replacing the alpha character with a numeric equivalent (ie: A = 1, H = 8). This renders the KEYQUAD code for the above example as 3812125.</attrdef>

The north-south line that runs through the initial point is a true meridian and is called the Principal Meridian. The east-west line that runs through the initial point is called a baseline. This system typically divides land into 6-mile-square townships, which are further subdivided into 36 one-mile-square sections. Sections can be further subdivided into quarter sections. Townships are surveyed north, south, east, and west from the initial point formed by the intersection of the meridian and the baseline. Each township is identified with a township and range designation. Township designations indicate the location north or south of the baseline, and range designations indicate the location east or west of the meridian. For element occurrences, the PLSS coordinate indicates where the center of the occurrence is most likely located. The meridian is indicated in parentheses, and is either "M," "H," or "S." These letters correspond to the Mt. Diablo, Humboldt, or San Bernardino meridians, respectively.</attrdef>

ELMTYPE indicates the type of element (plant, animal, terrestrial community or aquatic community), Accuracy Class is a code value (1 to 10) for Accuracy, and EOCOUNT relates the number of occurrences at a single mapped location (MAPNDX). For example, AVLCODE 10101 (1 01 01) indicates a Plant (ELMTYPE = 1), with an Accuracy Class of 01 (ACCURACY = 80 meters), with only one occurrence at that location (EOCOUNT = 01). AVLCODE 20812 indicates an Animal occurrence, with an Accuracy Class of 08 (ACCURACY = 4/5 mile), and a shared spatial location with eleven other occurrences (a "multiple"). <attrdef>An alternative code used for cartographic symbolization of the EO features contained in the GIS dataset. Symbology is based on four pieces of data -- ELMTYPE, ACCURACY (Accuracy Class), EOCOUNT and SENSITIVE -- which are combined to create a single code for purposes of assigning map symbols. ELMTYPE indicates the type of element (plant, animal, terrestrial community or aquatic community). Accuracy Class is a coded value, from 1 to 10, which indicates the accuracy of the mapped feature. The first digit of the Symbology value is from ELMTYPE, and the second and third digits are from Accuracy Class. If the EOCOUNT value is greater than one, this denotes a case where more than one EO exists at a single mapped feature (MAPNDX), which is called a multiple. Since any combination of plant, animal, or natural community may exist for a multiple, the first digit of Symbology is changed to 8 in order to represent the multiple as a distinct category. For example, Symbology 101 (1 01) indicates a Plant (ELMTYPE = 1), with an Accuracy Class of 01 (ACCURACY = 80 meters). Symbology 808 indicates a multiple (multiple Elements = 8), with an Accuracy Class of 08 (ACCURACY = 4/5 mile). <overview>
<eaover>This dataset can display positive sightings of rare plants and animals, and terrestrial and aquatic communities. The symbolic display of the dataset is typically based on three data fields which designate the certainty (Accuracy Class) that the scientist determines based on the accuracy of the reported location of the occurrence, the type of element (ELMTYPE), and how many occurrences share the same spatial feature (EOCOUNT). Additional fields describe the listing status, ranking, location, site description and source references, to name a few.</eaover>

The California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) is a product of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. It is distributed as a spatial dataset with associated tabular data files, and is intended for use by those subscribers who possess and are fluent in the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).
The CNDDB GIS dataset is not a ready-to-use application. Because of this, the CNDDB GIS dataset must be used in a GIS software package which meets the requirements described below. It is the responsibility of the subscriber to ensure that they have access to a compatible GIS system and are well versed in its proper use and in general GIS techniques. Any sample ArcView project files or ArcMap map documents included are intended only as a quick-start aid. Their functionality or suitability for any purpose are in no way warranteed or supported, nor are they intended to act as a replacement for solid GIS ability or understanding.
The CNDDB places the highest priority on ensuring the proper use of this dataset. Questions pertaining to the appropriate scientific or biological use of this dataset are welcomed and will be addressed by CNDDB staff scientists. Questions concerning the GIS data model, efficient data management, and appropriate methods of spatial analysis may be directed to the GIS technical staff. Questions pertaining to general GIS techniques, methodology, and software support, however, will not be addressed by CNDDB staff. It is the responsibility of the subscriber to ensure that they possess, or can acquire, sufficient skills or support in GIS methods to achieve their desired goal.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife makes no claim, implied or otherwise, as to the suitability of this dataset for the particular use which the subscriber may have in mind. The CNDDB is an ongoing and continuously updated database. While the information is complete and accurate to the best of our knowledge and ability, it does not constitute an official response from any state agency and will not in itself meet the requirements of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Information supplied is based on the material available at the time of the request and should not be regarded as complete data on the elements or areas being considered. The information must be used in consultation with the appropriate local, state and federal officials. Absence of data does not constitute the basis for a negative declaration.

<idAbs><DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>The California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) is a product of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Biogeographic Data Branch (BDB). Populations, individuals, or colonies located within 1/4 mile of each other generally constitute a single occurrence, sometimes with multiple parts.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>This layer was exported in April of 2026 for use by Fehr &amp; Peers for a trails inventory project through TCTC. </SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV></idAbs>

Organizations can make as many copies of the data and application as necessary for their internal use but cannot make copies for distribution outside of their organization.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV></useLimit>

<suppInfo>We work very hard to keep the CNDDB as current and up to date as possible given our capabilities and resources. However, we cannot and do not portray the CNDDB as an exhaustive and comprehensive inventory of rare species and natural communities. Field verification for the absence and presence of sensitive species will always be an important obligation of our customers. Likewise, your contribution of data to the CNDDB is equally important to the maintenance of the CNDDB.</suppInfo>
